Here's a link that covers the story about how XP Patch 811493 can slow some XP systems down to a crawl. I know I've been fretting because my 2-week old system suddenly went from a speed demon to a sloth. It took it forever to do anything. After uninstalling the patch, my machine is back to its wonderful speedy self.

I'm not recommending that anybody uninstall the patch, just passing along information so that you can make an informed decision...

Playing Solitaire is a processor-intensive, high level, sophisticated enterprise....possibly the most intricate process you can get your computer to handle.

Or, maybe not...

I have a question (back on track)

811493. I uninstalled it. Windows update had 3 new updates pop up and one of them was 811493. Is that a new one (version wise) or the same as the old one that I uninstalled? Did update just detect that I did not have it installed? Holding off on the install of the updates. Sure hope this is clear Thanks

I never install any systemwide updates from Microsoft, critical or not. I have learned from experience that I only risk getting problems from it when everything worked fine in the first place.

On the same topic, I resisted installing Windows Media Player 9 for a long time, at least while it wsa still in beta. But last week I finally installed it, and crap! I never learn! I should listen to myself sometimes! Now WMP is slow to a crawl on my Celeron 333, videos don't even match the soundtrack, and often it pops up "Reached end of file" before the video actually goes all the way to the end.
Anyway, I started using Real One player for the first time since then.

JetAudio 5 is a very nice player. Plays all my Music and Video. Too bad there are not so many skins for it yet.

the problem with that patch is that if you had ur anti virus program running during the installation than that is what caused it to slow down.
